# Specter API

Everything you do in the Specter app — boards and records, deals and leads, messages, documents,
money — has an API behind it. These docs cover how to reach it from your own code.

<Callout type="tip" title="New here?">
  The [Quickstart](/quickstart) gets a row onto a board in under five minutes.
</Callout>

## Two ways in

| | Board keys | Forms |
| --- | --- | --- |
| **Reaches** | One board or page | One published form |
| **Credential** | `sbk_…`, made on the board | None — the form's link |
| **Good for** | Servers, lead vendors, sync scripts | People filling in a page |
| **Runs** | On your server only | Anywhere, including a browser |

The [API reference](/api-reference) documents every route the Specter app itself uses. Those
routes answer a signed-in session; a board key opens only the [board routes](/boards/read-and-write).

## What's here

- **[Quickstart](/quickstart)** — a key, a read, a write.
- **[Authentication](/authentication)**, **[Errors](/errors)** and **[Rate limits](/rate-limits)** — the rules every route shares.
- **[Boards](/boards/overview)** — add rows to a board and read it back, with a board key.
- **[Forms](/forms/overview)** — collect records from people, with no key.
- **API reference** — every route, grouped by area, generated from the service's own catalog.
